Forest Schools

Forest School sessions are great way for children to experience the outdoors in a fun and adventurous way. These are themed sessions that are essentially child-led so they will evolve naturally according to individual children’s interests and abilities.

Example activities include: den building, foraging, campfire cooking, mini-beast hunts, river-dipping, fire lighting, woodland crafts, storytelling, water channelling and purification, making bows and arrows, survival days and natural paint making.

We work with nurseries, primary and secondary schools, home educators, community groups, families, youth groups, voluntary organisations and individuals. We offer six weeks introductory as well as long term Forest School programmes.

You may also book a one-off visit that will introduce the elements of the Forest School but please bear in mind that it will not give you the full experience.

In order to make the Forest School sessions most effective, we limit the number of children we can work with at a single time. The optimum number of participants is 20 but we can take up to 30.

We require that the children come supervised. We recommend 1:4 adult to child ratio and require a minimum of 1:5 ratio.

Our sessions are either half a day (2-3 hours) or a full day (4-5 hours).

Guide Price:

Half a day (2-3 hours) - £150

Full day (4-5 hours) - £190

6 weeks programmes (1 x 2 - hour session a week) £600

12 weeks and longer (1 x 2-hour session a week) £90 per session guide price.

Please note that the prices are for guidance only. They may vary depending on the type of session, location, materials used and a length of each project. We do offer discounts for longer term projects and can assist you in applying for funding.

The long-term projects (6 months plus) are most beneficial to participants and potentially most cost effective. Please get in touch to discuss it in more detail.

Bright Seedlings group for toddlers and pre-schoolers

Bright Seedlings Forest School group is specifically aimed at children aged 1-5 years. These sessions allow young children to explore freely through unstructured, child-led play, encouraging them to explore physical and emotional boundaries in the world around them, using all their senses, whilst developing their fine and gross motor skills.

Studies have shown that play is crucial in the growth and development of children’s brain, body and intellect. Children acquire knowledge experientially, through play, experimentation and appropriate risk-taking and many fundamental life skills can be most effectively learned through outdoor play. [Berkley et al.]

Testimonies:

“We are now in our third term of Bright Seedlings sessions and we absolutely love them, so much so, we also came to the Mother's Day and Father's Day events too! My daughter has flourished at forest school and feels absolutely at ease in the beautiful woodland setting. Her levels of confidence have really grown thanks to the hands-off approach of both staff and parents and she regularly makes new friends. She looks forward to coming each week, telling anyone who will listen what she has been/will be doing! I can thoroughly recommend Bright Woods Forest School.”

Home Education

This Forest School group is aimed at home educated and flexi schooled children of any age. The sessions allow children to build a connection with the natural world, learn new skills and enjoy social interaction with other children. The sessions are facilitated by trained Forest School Practitioners and led by the children according to their individual interests and abilities including SEND children. Research has shown that children who attend Forest Schools long term respond with increased confidence, better ability to manage risks and overall improved well-being.

Outdoor Education

In a recent publication, funded by the Department for Education, research revealed that children were more motivated to learn when outside.

Key findings included:

92 per cent of schools said it improves pupils’ health and wellbeing and engages them with learning

85 per cent of schools saw a positive impact on behaviour

79 per cent of teachers surveyed said outdoor learning had a positive impact on their teaching practice and 69 per cent said it had a positive impact on their professional development.

Alongside delivering extended sessions based on the Forest School ethos we are happy to create tailor made sessions to meet your needs. We can, for example:

  • put a STEM project in to practice,
  • inspire a piece of writing for English,
  • provide outdoor and adventurous activity for Physical Education,
  • bring Geography and Scientific research to life in the nature reserve.

The opportunities are endless and with our combined experience as an outdoor learning practitioner and a primary school teacher we are confident that we can provide you with an experience that the school, staff and the children will benefit from.

We highly recommend making a full day out of your visit, where you have a Curriculum structured session in the morning and Forest School inspired activities in the afternoon. This has proven to consolidate the learning experience that the children will remember and talk about for many days after.

Example activities include: habitat walks, river-dipping, mini-beast hunts, study into plants and animals of the local area, dinosaur digs, map reading, investigation of water properties and story-telling.

In order to make the sessions most effective, we limit the number of children we can work with at a single time. The optimum number of participants is 20 but we can take up to 30. If you would like to bring more children, we can split the group and run two parallel activities led by experienced practitioners at an additional cost.

We require that the children come supervised. We recommend 1:4 adult to child ratio and require a minimum of 1:5 ratio.

Our sessions are either half a day (2-3 hours) or a full day (4-5 hours).

“We… had a fantastic time. Spent the day hunting for minibeasts in and out of the water, making clay creatures, toasting marshmallows, hot chocolate, and den building, then testing them with a water bucket challenge. Thanks to both of you for making the day so enjoyable for our whole school, from Nursery to Year 6.”

D. Fletcher, Teacher, Woodland Primary School

Book Walks

Book walks are a great way to enthuse children about exploring the outdoors and incite a spirit of adventure whilst encouraging reading.

Our popular book walks and activities are based on children’s favourite stories, such as Julia Donaldson’s ‘Stick Man’ and ‘The Gruffalo’ and Michael Rosen’s ‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt.’ Children step into the story by listening and participating in activities that are inspired by the narrative. All book walks end by toasting marshmallows around a campfire.

These sessions are suitable for groups of approximately 30 children.

Guide Price:

2 hours - £150

There might be a small additional charge for the materials depending on the activities.

We require that the children come supervised. We recommend 1:4 adult to child ratio and require a minimum of 1:5 ratio.

Wildcraft Adventure

Survive the Wilderwood, Beat the Monsters, Open the Portal!

In video games like Minecraft and Terraria, players have to survive in a hostile environment, build their own home, hunt for their food, search for resources and fend off wandering monsters. Sure, your child can survive in the 'wilderness' on the computer screen, but can they do it out in the real woods? In this exciting outdoor game kids must work together, using what they know from video games, to learn outdoor survival skills and earn points along the way.

Playing Wildcraft Adventure™ is a fantastic way to get your video game obsessed child out into nature.

Just like in their favourite video games, kids are set a number of challenges throughout the day such as building dens before 'night' falls and the monsters wake up. Players learn how to light fires, 'mine' for resources and use sharp tools; all closely supervised by experienced outdoor activity leaders. There is also plenty of time to get creative with play and imagination.

The game is offered in either half a day or full day option.

It is open to children aged between 6 - 12 years. Please check our Events section for the next game or sign up for our mailing list to get updates.
